Year Six

Welcome to Year 6

Class teacher: Mr Hasyn

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Hall, Mrs Grace

When your child starts in a new year group, there are often lots of questions that you have. We hope that this information will help you and your child to adjust to any changes. Staff are always available at the beginning and end of the school day if you have any questions or queries.
The children come straight into class after the gate opens at 8.45.
You can download the Year Six Curriculum map at the bottom of the page.

Curriculum Organisation
In Year 6, English and Maths are taught daily. Foundation subjects are organised into blocks, meaning that for a number of weeks we might focus on History in our topic lessons, before moving into a block of Geography. This approach allows the children to develop deeper knowledge and understanding within each subject area.
Science, PSHE and Spanish are each taught on a weekly basis. RE and Music are taught on a half-termly rotation — we will focus on one subject for a half term before switching to the other.

Reading
It is important that your child reads at home regularly. You can support your child by hearing them read aloud and by asking them questions about the text to develop their comprehension skills. Children should ensure that their reading book and reading journal are in school every day.

Library
In Year 6, children may borrow a book from the school library. They will have the opportunity to change this book weekly.

Physical Education
Children should come to school wearing their PE kits on Tuesday and Friday.

Home Learning
Each week, children are expected to read at least four times and to have their reading recorded in their Reading Journal. Over the course of each half term, children should also complete two Reading Journal activities.
All children have access to Maths Whizz. The expectation is that children complete a minimum of 60 minutes each week. Please note that 20 minutes of this takes place in school, so children are expected to complete at least 40 minutes at home each week.

Water Bottles
Throughout the school, children are asked to bring in a named bottle of water each day, which they can drink from in the classroom. These should be sports style bottles rather than screw top bottles. Children keep their water bottles in their smart sacks.

Pencil Cases
Children are provided with a pencil case containing all the items they will need, so there is no need for children to bring in stationery items from home.

Named Clothing
Please can you ensure that all your child's uniform is named. Most uniform looks very similar, so it is hard to return items if there are no visible names.
